Grossman's has been well received and I really enjoyed reading Rutherford's version. I started reading Edith Grossman's translation of Don Quixote this week. But of course things aren't as simple as this and you have Edith Grossman translating Cervantes (the little I've read of her translation of Don Quixote seems OK) and Lydia Davis translating Flaubert and Proust. There's also the option of checking out particular translators on Amazon. Though there have been many valuable English translations of Don Quixote, I would commend Edith Grossman's new version for the extraordinarily high quality of her prose. Fortunately or unfortunately – depending . Edith Grossman is one of the English-language's most renowned translators, having translated key works by Nobel laureates Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa. It's intersting StevieB as the translation of Don Quixote I bought last year makes much use of the colloquial or vernacular, especially working class English expressions, used here to convey Sancho's muddled use of the proverb, I know, unless I learn Spanish and then can understand much old - fallen out of usage - Spanish vocabulary, that would be a difficult read, I've had Spanish speakers confirm as much to me. Not that this is directly answering your question at all! I'm not sure that there's anywhere you can browse for new translations, but the individual wikipedia entries often mention new translations. And I just got in the mail my copy of the new translation of Don Quixote by Edith Grossman, just published under the Ecco imprint of HarperCollins. My choice: DON QUIXOTE, in the relatively new translation by Edith Grossman. Don Quixote, Book 1, tells the story of a man more optimistic and idealistic than any other in literature.. NOTE: You don't need to read Don Quixote to understand this post. PicassoDonQuixoteSancho you didn't follow your old teacher's recommendations, but “The Don” is a good choice too. There's also been two recent translations of Don Quixote, Edith Grossman's and John Rutherford's. Not a new edition, but an exact copy of the old text with shiny new covers and a printface that you immediately realise is a photocopy of the original.
